Living at Nyland: Community Expectations

At Nyland, being part of the community means more than just living here—it’s about contributing to the shared life and values that make our neighborhood unique. These expectations are designed to foster connection, collaboration, and a thriving community for all.

Core Expectations

  1. Identify as a Community Member

    • By choosing to live at Nyland, you commit to participating in community activities and following our agreements.

  2. Follow Community Agreements and Processes

    • Abide by our shared agreements, which are developed collaboratively.

    • Use Nyland's decision-making and design review processes for changes that may affect others (e.g., building a deck, planting a tree).

    • Engage neighbors for feedback and maintain harmony.

  3. Commit to Resolving Conflicts

    • Address issues directly with neighbors.

    • If needed, facilitators are available to help resolve disputes and find solutions.

  4. Participate in Community Work

    • Nyland is self-managed, and participation is essential.

    • Join a Community Action Group (CAG) and contribute to our shared resources and amenities.

    • Expect to contribute approximately 2.5 hours per week through meetings, workdays, or other tasks.

Participation Requirements

  1. Land Maintenance

    • Participate in 3 land workdays per year (8 hours total) to maintain and improve shared spaces.

  2. Common House Cleaning

    • Attend 2 kitchen cleaning days per year (about 3 hours each) to keep our Common House in top shape.

  3. Community Meetings

    • Attend at least 4 community meetings per year (8 hours total) to stay informed and contribute to decision-making.

  4. Community Action Groups (CAGs)

    • Join at least one CAG, with a typical commitment of 4 hours per month.

Getting Involved Before Joining

  • Attend a Community Meal

    • Meet residents, ask questions, and experience the Nyland community firsthand.

  • Join a Land Workday

    • Help maintain our shared spaces and connect with neighbors while working together.

  • Attend a Community Meeting

    • Observe how decisions are made collaboratively, focusing on listening to all voices and finding solutions that work for everyone.

Participation is the foundation of life at Nyland. It’s how we build relationships, manage our community, and create a welcoming, sustainable neighborhood where everyone has a role in making Nyland a great place to live.
